2023 F1 AUSTIN US GP Friday QUALIFYING analysis by Peter Windsor
Qualifying on Friday in Austin indicated that Sunday's race will be dramatically close. Red Bull's Max Verstappen starts only P6 after exceeding track limits on his pole lap; Ferrari are P1-P4 with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz; Lando Norris is again right up there for McLaren (P2); and the Mercedes drivers, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, are starting P3-P5. Peter Windsor looks back at the day's key elements.

Music: Arabesque (Debussy), performed by Ohad Ben Ari. This is in part a tribute to François Cevert, who lost his life 50 years ago this month. As well as being the brightest of young F1 stars, François was also a concert-standard pianist. Pierre Gasly is wearing a Cevert-themed helmet in Austin this weekend.
