The BMW M3 CS and M4 CSL are two highly-anticipated vehicles from the German automaker. Both vehicles are lighter versions of the M3 and M4 models and share similar names, which has led to many comparisons between the two cars. However, despite their similarities, there are also several key differences between the two vehicles.

One of the main similarities between the two cars is their powertrain. Both the M3 CS and M4 CSL come with a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged 'S58' inline-six engine that generates 543 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This is more power than the standard M3 and M4 models.

In terms of design, the two cars have very similar front-end styling. Both vehicles feature the same frameless grille with lateral 'Y' shaped grille inserts, aggressive front air intakes, and a carbon fiber front lip. The headlights are also the same across all M3 and M4 models, not just the CSL. The only noticeable difference in the front design is the hood stripes, with the M4 CSL featuring black stripes with red accents, while the M3 CS has black stripes without red accents.

The two cars also have similar design cues in profile, with the same wheels, side skirts, side mirrors, and Air Breather front fender vent. However, the back of the cars is where the biggest design differences can be found. The M3 CS and M4 CSL have different taillights, due to the 3 Series and 4 Series having different lamps. They also have very different rear spoilers, with the M3 CS having a small carbon fiber lip spoiler on the trunk lid and the M4 CSL having an integrated ducktail spoiler built into the trunk, similar to the E46 M3 CSL.

Inside, the two cars are virtually identical, with both featuring black and red color schemes as their only options, Alcantara steering wheels, and carbon fiber sport buckets. The M4 CSL can be optioned with manually-adjustable racing buckets, while the M3 CS cannot. Despite these similarities, the M3 CS is a sedan with a rear bench seat and the M4 CSL is a coupe with a rear seat delete.

In terms of performance, the M4 CSL is considered the more hardcore, stripped-out, and rawer of the two vehicles. It is lighter and more focused on performance. On the other hand, the M3 CS is considered more comfortable, practical and comes with all-wheel drive. In conclusion, both cars have similar names, purposes, and performance, but there are specific reasons to choose one over the other depending on your preferences.
