149For as long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with spooky stories. As a kid, I couldn't get enough of R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series. In fact, ‘Night of the Living Dummy’ continues to live rent-free in my head, yes, even after all these years. But the absolute highlight for me was Nickelodeon's “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”, perhaps, the network’s crown jewel. Produced by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel, the series ran from 1992-1996 and later had two revivals. Each episode began with The Midnight Society, a group of teens gathering around a campfire in the woods on a Saturday night. Every time, a new member would step onto the stage, throw a handful of ‘midnight dust’, really just plain Coffee-Mate, into the fire, and begin to tell a spooky story. “Are You Afraid of the Dark?' was terrifying not only because of the werewolves, demons, and phantoms but also because it skillfully exploited the common fears that haunted us as children. Scared about what might be hiding in your closet? Guess what? You should be. Petrified by the thought that your toys might just spring to life in the middle of the night? Umm…they just might.
