Does overclocking your hardware shorten their lifespan?

FACT:
Many motherboards have automatic overclocking features and some video cards are pre-overclocked. Also with overclocking software and other tools, it's fairly common these days. I've been doing it as long as I can remember and very few components failed as a direct result of overclocking.
