28 Years Later Interview: Spoilers with Danny Boyle and Alex Garland
The highly anticipated and long-awaited sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later is finally hitting theaters this week. 28 Years Later reveals how Britain has been fundamentally changed by the initial Rage Virus outbreak that audiences first witnessed in 2002. The film reunites director Danny Boyle with screenwriter Alex Garland, who worked on the original film together and last teamed for Sunshine, their 2007 science fiction film.
28 Years Later marks the beginning of a new trilogy of films set to explore the post-apocalyptic world in more depth. Set nearly three decades after the initial outbreak, the new chapter in the franchise has much more to explore than the chaos portrayed in the immediate survival of the virus.. So many years later, there are psychological scars and generational trauma to examine while humanity continues to try to rebuild — if it ever can. The cast of 28 Years Later includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Jamie, Jodie Comer as Isla, and breakout actor Alfie Williams as Spike, a family whose lives have been shaped by the new world they live in. Additional cast for the film includes Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, Emma Laird, Edvin Ryding, Chi Lewis-Parry, and more.
In an interview with Collider's Perri Nemiroff, Boyle and Garland discuss the evolution of their post-apocalyptic saga. First, Garland dives into the lore of the new Infected, while the pair continue on to discuss the human compassion in 28 Years Later. Boyle also reveals his favorite visuals from the film, and the pair discuss how the original script for 28 Years Later was never intended to be the first chapter of a new trilogy, and why the idea blossomed into one.
