I was asked to look at the difference in damage between 2d6 weapons (greatswords and mauls) and 1d12 weapons (greataxes) in Baldur's Gate 3. This video shows my findings and in the end the difference is very small in almost all cases, much smaller than the differences between actual weapons. So I would suggest that you pick whatever you find the most find to use.
