3 Optional Rules for 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons| D&D Discussions
Here are the optional rules sent to us by Kurt.
1. Initiative: The standard initiative model got a bit stale and overly-manipulated, and players felt screwed when a character with a high AC rolled poorly, and it affected the whole combat.
Using passive initiative(no roll) was appropriate but felt static, and players missed rolling for initiative.
Rolling initiative rolls for each round of combat was way more exciting, but slowed the game.
Now we blindly roll before combat, often at the start of the game (a dice tower is great for this).
The DM creates a list (and cackles evilly).
The player has the satisfaction of having rolled, each round the initiative order changes, and the mystery of combat order puts the players on edge and keeps their attention.
This results in a high-action game and allows for interesting ability combinations in set-up and execution. Especially if an action is held.
2. Defense: Instead of using base armor class 10+AC bonuses, we roll 1D20 & add DC bonuses for defenses.
- This makes target AC's a lot more dynamic, and the player's become a lot more excited and engaged.
3. Scaled successes. If a player beats a target D20 check by +10, they get a special bonus or affect (within reason). We call this "Overkill".
