Family makes your world complete. We don't realize the importance of being blessed with a family, being surrounded by people who actually love you. Most of us take our families for granted. Especially when we're kids and we don't understand the importance of relationships. We don't realize that it's our family that shapes our childhood, our future, our lives are completely dependent on them. But imagine that you do make all these realizations, but then you find out that it was all a lie? What? Well, such was the case for this guy, Steve Jr., or better yet, 'Marx'?
When United States Army officer Steve Carter and his wife, Pat, decided that they should adopt a child, they couldn't keep their eyes off this three and a half year blonde boy. It took the couple a mere second, just a glance, to decide that this little kid, named Tenzin Amea, was the child they were looking for. They describe the entire incident as love at first sight.
Tenzin Amea was born in January 16, 1977. He was in the care of the State for three years and got adopted on September 23, 1980. Steve and Pat knew very little about their new son’s birth parents. All the information that they were provided with was that the biological father of the kid was a native Hawaiian while the biological mother got arrested in 1977 when Tenzin was just five months old. When Steve and Pat adopted the little boy they renamed him William Steven Tenzin Carter.
With time, Tenzin was slowly known as Steve. Jr. It just took him months to embrace his new life. Afterall, he was now surrounded by people who loved him unconditionally. He lived in a wealthy town of Medford Lakes in southern New Jersey where he had, sort of, a very normal childhood. He went to school, did sports, made friends, got involved in minor fights…well, he pretty much did everything you'd expect from a growing kid.
It was in his adulthood that he became really curious about his biological parents. The truth was never kept hidden from him, all his life he knew that he was adopted. Well, it was quite impossible to hide the truth from him considering the fact that his features were quite different from the genes that run in the family. “With his blonde hair, blue eyes, and a light complexion,” Steve Sr. said in an interview, “[he] does not strike one as being of Polynesian extraction.”
This curiosity, the hunger to find out his past, his existence and why was he abandoned... So many questions were left unanswered and Steve was fishing for answers. All of this lead him to a unique Christmas gift in the form of a DNA test. He was in utter shock when he found out that he had Scandinavian ancestry. This reveal didn't help him a little bit, instead it made him even more anxious. He became even more restless because for him, it opened even more questions than answers!
In 2011, Steven read a story about a woman, named Carlina White. Somehow he felt that he could relate to her story. He realized that he had to do something similar in order to find out his undiscovered past. Carlina was kidnapped as a baby and was brought to Harlem hospital. She was raised in Connecticut and had a normal childhood. However, when she turned 23, she went through missing persons list where she found out the daunting truth. The woman she called her mother was, in fact, the kidnapper who snatched her away from her real parents.
Recalling Carlina’s story, Steve Jr. didn’t stop at questioning his Scandinavian heritage. He was looking for signs, he was looking for clues, he was looking for anything that would point him towards the answers of the thousands of questions he had in his mind. He started off, just like Carlina, by going through the missing persons list, praying to God that his story was nowhere near what she discovered. He searched on missingkids.com, ran by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Steven kept on scrolling, clicking on the pictures, zooming in, comparing them with himself. After what felt like thousands of hours, Steve came across something that left him stunned. Chills went down his spine as he took a closer look.
