I'm unsure what there is to discuss? of course it is! The more the merrier I say... Hold on, it was videogames Plato was on about right?

Run Sabre maybe less than original, but that doesn't mean it's a poor game. While the similarities with Strider and Revenge of Shinobi are undeniable, it's hardly a bad thing to have another well made Ninja adventure, and tho Sega maybe where people turn for their first meal in retro Ninja gaming, with Hagane & now Run Sabre, the Snes is shaping up to have quite the hidden back catalogue of very decent Ninja games of it's own.

Strictly speaking I'm not sure you can even class Run Sabre as a Ninja game. As the title suggests, the hero wields a sabre rather than a kitana. The lack of any secondary or projectile weapons does limit the enjoyment in attack some, but the inclusion of room clearing magic, a Metroid style screw attack, fly-kick & a floor slide go a long way to satisfying that itch for more.

As with all decent Ninja games the action is fast and furious offering stages packed with hoards of enemies and plenty of sub bosses. Spamming moves such as the screw attack and slide, usually results in taking damage, especially against bosses, demanding a more delicate and precision use of your skills, again playing to the Ninja aesthetic.

That said, It's fair to say its one of the easier games of the genre, with 5 medium sized stages that should only take an average gamer a few attempts to memorize. The life metre starts you with only 3 HP, & carries between stages, but its relatively painless to obtain more & overall life & continue count is generous. Despite at first appearing infinite, each area has a limited number of enemy spawns and with no ingame timer, a cautious 'room clearing' approach, is a far safer strategy.

Bosses are plentiful and sometimes feel slightly unfair, but the overall ease of the game does well to balance any frustration caused.

Overall this is well made, good looking, great sounding and very enjoyable Ninja game that definitely deserves its hidden gem status.
