It's difficult to say whether it's a sign of quality on SNK's part or a sign of their decline that their portable crossover game was signficantly better than their console one.
This is the excellent SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millenium. It's a superb title with a great range of characters, four hidden characters, four unlockable bosses, tons of fighting styles to choose, the ability to playthrough with a single character, 3-person team or tag-team, and more. It's easily the best fighter on the system, and considering how many good ones there were, that's saying quite a bit.
As this is a unique game, instead of a port, there is luckily a fair amount more to say about it. Match of the Millenium's arcade mode typically involves fighting against a variety of opponents, including the chosen character's rival, then fighting three "guards" before facing a tag-team of the bosses and hidden characters M. Bison and Geese Howard, who I'll be covering tomorrow. After they are defeated, the player faces one of two possible final bosses; Orochi Iori or Evil Ryu.
Given my open bias for SNK, I'll be looking at Orochi Iori first. Though derivative of Iori, Orochi Iori is more powerful than him in general. Most notably, his projectiles are significantly bigger than Iori's, deal more damage, and explode on impact, making him seem like much more of a boss than in previous incarnations. Other than that however, he's the same Orochi Iori as usual. As a final boss however he works quite well, however, he is a horribly tedious to unlock. Match of the Millenium was one of the games to inspire me to do these videos, and so my save files pack unsurprisingly includes this one with all characters unlocked.
