3D in Review for the week of July 18 - 24, 2015 "Can "3D" save our past?"
The Smithsonian launched a KickStarter this week to preserve the spacesuit that Neil Armstrong wore on the moon. Part of the money raised will be used to restore the suit and then preserve it for viewing. Another part will used to 3D scan the suit using CT scanning and other techniques to create highly accurate and detailed 3D models that you can then view or even print. 3D scans from President Obama to the Mt. Rushmore have acquired for historical preservation. With the "Holo Deck" just around the corner, along with even better 3D artificial/organic material fabrication, are we finally living, instead dreaming of a "Star Wars" or "Star Trek" world?

I also like to offset most 3d printed inserts by .1mm which is a realistic number for injection molding anyways, so when you decide to scale up the models probably have no need to change.
