I converted a bird feeder stand into a painting stand. I just wrapped a plastic garbage bag over the stand so I wouldn't get paint on it, and then used a piece of carpet transition trim (no idea if that's what it's really called) to span across it and hang things to be painted.
To hang pieces for paint, I'm using copper wire that comes from scrap household wiring that goes inside the walls. It's thick enough to hold up well and can be bent many times before it breaks.
