3D Printing an Object from VR using Oculus Medium
So what’s fun about having unique things in your classroom like a 3D Printer and a VR headset is that not only do they open up the possibility to do new things separately… they also combine to make new possibilities that require both of them to work together!
Here’s a video I made in February showing how you can sculpt something in VR (using Oculus Medium), and then print it out using our low-budget classroom 3D printer. It’s surprisingly not that complicated.
My build in the video is really simple because A) it was 100% my first time using Oculus Medium, and B) it was a Saturday and I didn't want to wait forever for the item to print.
Basically all of my 7th grade kids were able to independently do this project from start to finish. We ended up using it as a community building/identity exploration focused on the prompt of "Self Portraits". Students made self-portraits that represented who they were symbolically. They were absolutely amazing!
My class voted on the name "Main Rats", if you're curious about what I was making.
