3I/ATLAS: 4 Telescopes Confirm It's Not What We Thought
Four of Earth’s most powerful telescopes have confirmed shocking details about interstellar visitor 3I/ATLAS — and the data defies everything we thought we knew about comets.
The James Webb Space Telescope uncovered chemistry that shouldn’t exist: an impossible 8:1 carbon dioxide to water ratio, with missing gas signatures that break comet physics. Hubble recorded the first-ever anti-tail pointing directly at the Sun, violating the laws that normally govern comet tails. The Very Large Telescope detected metallic nickel inside the nucleus — elements expected in asteroids, not icy interstellar bodies. And most astonishing of all, SPHEREx measurements point to a 46 km nucleus, making 3I/ATLAS a million times more massive than any interstellar object seen before.
Add to this its retrograde 175° orbit and a trajectory so precise it leaves only a 0.0005% chance of being natural, and scientists are now forced to reconsider whether this object is something entirely different from a comet.
