The 3rd Conditional is used for imagining situations in the past and their consequent imagined results.
Structure:
In the conditional clause we use: 'If+S+Past Perfect'
In the consequent claude we use:
'S+ Past Perfect Modal'
('If' can be omitted by using the S-V-Inversion)
E.g.
If he had studied hard, he would have passed the exam.
Or,
Had he studied hard he would have passed the exam.
Or,
He would have passed the exam, if he had studied hard.
Or,
He would have passed the exam, had he studied hard.
