Septerra Core is what you get when you combine an experimental battle system from the late 90s, with Monkey Island, Sci Fi weirdness, and a bit of B-tier dev jank - and actually have it come together "pretty good". It earns its cult classic status, and is pretty fun in general - though has enough quirks to make it a solid "7 out of 10" game.

And yes, the battle system is like if a jRPG and a cRPG had a baby - real time with pause meets Chrono Trigger if you will. (also has a mildly confusing ending). I enjoy it, but I'd watch a bit before you take the dive.

In this case, the GoG and Steam versions are pretty close to equal - so I would generally lean towards GoG being the better option (When on sale, it usually goes lower on GoG than Steam):
