Gameplay of the hidden boss Shadow in Incredible Technologies' BloodStorm.

This is Shadow. Although Shadow is usually used for the name of ninjas and edgy hedgehogs, here it's taken on a more literal sense. Shadow is an invisible character, who only appears when he is attacked, and his movement can only be identified by where his shadow currently is. To say this is a dumb idea is a complete understatement, but I'm already running out of expletives and insults to hurl at this game regardless, so I'll try not to dwell on it too much. Shadow is fought by performing two fatalities against your opponent (stage fatalities count). You'll then be brought to his secret level, where you fight against him in a dark room, if only to make him even more tedious to fight. At least, that's how it's supposed to work, because I end up fighting Shadow anyway.

Shadow is the only character in the game who was never legitimately made playable. Although revisions of the game made Blood, Chainsaw and Nekron playable, Shadow was never made playable, I presume because it would be considered too cheap or something to allow him to be used in human hands. As the great Torentsu brought up to me however, it is possible to play as him by entering two-player mode once you enter a fight with him, and then having the entering player press a button without moving the joystick. Whether this is intentional or not I have no clue, but I suspect it isn't, and is just yet another flaw in an already flawed game. Shadow's not even very powerful, so why a boss as broken as Nekron is playable and Shadow isn't is beyond me, but I suspect it's because he's supposed to be a frustrating boss. Spoiler Alert: he's really not. Even playing as Shadow against him all I had to do was keep jump-punching him and he went down pretty easily. Hell, he actually seems to be the easiest of the Agents of Nekron to defeat, which is odd considering they are intended to be (and to be as difficult as) the hidden boss ninjas from MK2. All in all therefore, Shadow is yet another gimmick crammed into a game chock full of them. Like most gimmicks, he's interesting for about five minutes, and then wears out his welcome.
