Ghost of Tsushima is an open world game developed by Sucker Punch, known for its Sly Cooper and InFamous series, which take inspirations from classic Akira Kurosawa films and the Mongol Invasion of Tsushima. The story begins during the Kamakura period of Japan in 1274, where a Mongol fleet led by Khotun Khan invades the island of Tsushima. Standing in Khotun’s way at Komoda beach is a group of samurai warriors led by Lord Shimura, Jito of Tsushima with his nephew (and game protagonist) Jin Sakai. The Battle of Komoda then led to the brutal and massive defeat of the Samurai which resulted to the Mongol’s capture of Lord Shimura and the deaths of most of its warriors. Although initially believed to have died, Jin Sakai was saved by a thief named Yuna and will then travel across the lands of Tsushima to recruit allies and learn guerilla warfare in order to thwart the growing advancement of the Mongol empire in the island to mainland Japan. In this epic journey, you will then witness the events that will unfold which will give rise to the legend of the Ghost of Tsushima.

Although receiving only an above average Metacritic score of 83 in the PS4, the game would receive high praises from fans in the gaming community especially in Japan where it received a perfect 40/40 score in Famitsu which is only the 3rd western developed game to have done so (the other two being Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Grand Theft Auto V). Due to its popularity, the game also received 32 Game of the Year Awards/#1 listed game among various game reviewers and media which is only behind to Hades and The Last of Us Part II in 2020. High praises were given to its cast of characters, world design, musical score and cinematography which were considered as a “work of art” as it gave the gamers a feel and vision of lands of Japan and the lives of its inhabitants in the point of view of an artist or painter. The world exploration was considered a major innovation in gaming which introduced on how the nature (the winds particularly) guides the players in exploring the game’s world. Moreover, the game’s progression and fighting mechanics were also given good reviews due to its smooth flow, the diverse enemies in the game and being balanced while also being challenging and without the need of grinding anything. On the other hand, the story, side quests and the open world activities were criticized for being generic, repetitive and boring. The stealth mechanics of the game were also considered a weak aspect of the game being too basic with the enemy AI being questioned for being inadequate.

As for me, this game is my favorite game of 2020 and also my personal Game of the Year of the same year. I loved the grounded and realistic approach made by Sucker Punch in making the game. I also loved the theme of the game which gave and showed me the authentic feel of Japan and its ancient cultures pertaining to the samurai and the common folk in Tsushima during 1274. The gameplay was the biggest strength of the game for me due to its interactivity in which every hit on the enemy feels real and its encourages the player to do different strategies in beating the game’s diverse enemy. I also loved the characters in the game in wherein I did not find anyone whom I disliked with arch-nemesis Jin Sakai and Khotun Khan being my favorites. Although the side content was a bit generic and repetitive for me, it still gave me a momentary bliss from the game’s larger and heavy main quests. Moreover, I really liked the game’s progression which stayed away from RPG-like mechanics which I am seriously tired of nowadays lol. Overall, a game which is for me a MUST PLAY for everyone who owns a PS4 game, enjoy the walkthrough!!!
