I went looking for relief from the mid-jab spam into which the Quest AI in VF4:Evolution forced my severely mediocre skills, with this fantastical notion of what her old, VF4 Vanilla "Muay Thai" style was like--and it turns out it's actually pretty darned similar to the "Offensive Style" that replaced it in Evo, and I still end up falling back to mid-jab spam, because it's still just about the only move the AI doesn't punish relentlessly whenever it wants.
Her dfK works a little better here but it still feels slightly weak. Evo's lunging, distance-closing ffP is gone; she can fP+K,fP+K or ffP+K,PP to close some distance with lunging knock-downs, but they're less nimble, harder to execute, and slower to recover than Evo's ffP, leaving you much more vulnerable.
The tantalizing thing was that it's easier to go from jabs to throwing in Kumite than in Quest, and this is really the only way I found to bring significant, reliable damage to her jab game--except that in Vanilla, the AI just stops letting you throw it when it doesn't want to lose, ie when it is within one round of losing the match, particularly at mid and higher dan ranks: it just starts escaping every throw attempt. So the jab-to-throw strategy evaporates.
So without ffP, and with much wilder Jackys and Aois, even more dominant ninja frame traps, no rematches, and lots of other rough edges, things are overall probably worse for my poor Vanessa's survival here than in Quest.
I went through her Muay Thai moves in Training and didn't see anything that would bail me out. So I'm going to give Vanessa a rest; I can't handle her, at least not in my goofy no-Guard scheme. I'll keep playing Jacky in Evo.
For now, I think I'll fill in the two days a week I'd been playing Vanessa by doubling up on CvSP and MvC2: I'm thinking MvC2 on Wednesdays and Sundays and Pro on Mondays and Thursdays.
