At the time of writing this (August 2023), A-Bit of Touhou is close to reaching 1 million views on YouTube. It is by far the biggest surprise to me out of all my videos.
When I make these videos, I endeavour to understand the game/show/movie/meme/artist from the inside. I like to understand what the music means to the fanbase, and hopefully become a fan myself. For most of my videos I've chosen to cover music I was already a fan of, so this was easy, but once I started getting requests I had to work harder to understand the music people were asking for. When you’re holding yourself to a weekly post schedule it’s not always possible to become a diehard fan (not to mention the fact that some things just aren’t for you…).
All of this is to say that I did NOT understand Touhou from the inside, nor how big a fanbase it had, so when I see that it has been so popular despite how little I know, I wonder what I could have accomplished if I been a bigger fan.
That said, I still like what’s there and the relentless beat and key changes are pretty hype.
