A Critical Thought on Progression Mechanics
For today's Critical Thought, I turn to progression in game design. Progression, no matter what kind of game, falls into two groups: Player or skill-based, and character or abstraction-based.
Both have their own unique charms and fan-bases. As designers, you need to understand how they both work and what happens when you combine elements from each into something unique.
