3It's time to play the newest Dark Souls-ish game, Salt and Sanctuary. Death and adventure awaits us as we explore this new world together. So come and join me as we discover its deadly secrets.
One moment we're on a ship, the next we're waking up on the stony shore. A mysterious decrepit old man awaits us, and we take our first steps into our new sanctuary. But what's this? It seems a feast has been set up to celebrate our arrival, we should go and greet our gracious hosts. And such as it is, this is how our adventure begins.
Salt and Sanctuary is a 2D action role-playing video game developed and published by Ska Studios. Salt and Sanctuary was released on March 15, 2016, for the PlayStation 4, with later releases for Microsoft Windows and the PlayStation Vita. It is heavily inspired by the Souls series by Japanese developer FromSoftware. Salt and Sanctuary received positive reviews from critics, who praised its graphical style, gameplay, and lore.
Salt and Sanctuary features 2D hand drawn visuals, as well as gameplay mechanics similar to the Souls series. There are 600 items players may use, and the several weapon categories have special movesets including air attacks. Players can wield two handed weapons for additional power, and shields to defend and parry. Magic and ranged attacks can also be performed. Salt and Sanctuary implements RPG concepts such as origins, classes and stat development, as well as an extensive skill tree providing hundreds of combinations. Salt and Sanctuary also provides a multiplayer option, and asynchronous features such as messages that may be interchanged between players. Multiplayer allows for co-operative and versus play, but it is local only.
Since its release, Salt and Sanctuary received positive reviews, and has an aggregate score score of 86/100 on Metacritic. IGN awarded it a score of 8.6 out of 10, saying "You could call Salt and Sanctuary a 2D mashup of Dark Souls and Castlevania, and you'd be right. But such a simple pronouncement would be a disservice to the tremendous amount of thought that's gone into Salt and Sanctuary, whether it's in the graphic style that evokes horror through the style of comic strips or in the intricate web of dungeons and castles serves as it map." Fextralife awarded it a score of 9.0 out of 10, saying "An intimate, exciting and discovery-fueled experience, rich in content and secrets, will have players exploring and lorecrafting for months to come. The price point sweetens the deal for any Souls, RPG or Castlevania fan looking for a new and satisfying experience." PlayStation Lifestyle awarded it a score of 8.0 out of 10, saying "Salt and Sanctuary is fairly shameless in the way it replicates elements from games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne, but that’s not really a bad thing when you see how it all comes together as a polished and thoroughly enjoyable final product."
