The latest Long Term Support (LTS) version of the Kubuntu operating system for desktop PCs and laptops, Kubuntu 24.04.1 supported with security and maintenance updates, until April 2027.
Under the hood, there have been updates to many core packages, including a new 6.8-based kernel, KDE Frameworks 5.115, KDE Plasma 5.27 and KDE Gear 23.08.
Support lifespan
Kubuntu 24.04 will be supported for 3 years.

New features and changes in 24.04
Core desktop and applications
Plasma 5.27: simple by default, powerful when needed
Plasma 5.27.11 has been developed to make it smoother to use while retaining the familiar setup.
Kubuntu 24.04 ships the 11th scheduled bugfix release of KDE Plasma 5.27 (5.27.11). Kubuntu 24.04 ships the latest Frameworks 5 release of 5.115.0
KDE Apps updates, including KDE Gear 23.08 and other updated apps
Web browser and office suite
Firefox 117 snap is the default browser from the Snap Store.
LibreOffice 24.2 is provided by default in the full installation.
Qt
Kubuntu 24.04 ships with Qt 5.15.13
Other new and updated applications in the Ubuntu archive
KDEs own Haruna and Elisa is now installed by default.
KDE applications are updated to the latest 23.08.5
DigiKam is at 8.2

Plasma Wayland session
A Plasma Wayland session is available for testing by installing the plasma-workspace-wayland package, but is not supported. A Wayland session can then be started by selecting it at the login screen.
