A Punishing Roguelite Where You Die In 1 Hit | Koboo: The Tree Spirit demo
2Hello everyone! Another demo from the Steam Next Fest here. This is Koboo: The Tree Spirit, which is describes as a mix between soulslike, roguelite and metroidvania (roguevania), but so far it is mostly a roguelite with punishing combat. Enemies look like taken from a soulslike, but there is not stamina and there is apparently a parry mechanic that was never explained to me. So, it has the difficulty and the looks of a soulslike, but I don't know if it should be called one.
Anyways, the pixel art is great and the core concept is actually pretty interesting (AND HARD). You die in 1 hit, but, after you take that hit, you have a few seconds to kill one enemy to prevent that from happening.
Combat feels decent, but sometimes it is a bit unresponsive (might be because of some animations). Oh, also, I need to remark the fact that you attack where your mouse is aiming at, not where you are looking at, and that can be a bit tough to control with no crosshair (I lose sight of my mouse on the screen quite often). I like that there is a dash, but it is too short, considering most of the enemies and projectiles are HUGE.
Boss design was pretty cool, but the other enemies felt harder than the boss itself (the crossbow guy was easy to kill, but his attacks were pretty deceivent, aiming to one side and shooting to a different one).
