Hey everyone Kane from VividChim here & today we’re taking “A Quick Look At” Back 4 Blood after getting my hands on the pre-alpha this weekend.

For those who don’t know or can’t tell based off of the pretty on the nose title or logo, Back 4 Blood is a spiritual successor to the Left 4 Dead series made by Turtle Rock studios, the team who made the original games over a decade ago.

The game, like it’s predecessor is a co-op fps where you and up to 3 others take control of a team of survivors trying to make their way to safety through the hordes of infected. In this case we have The Ridden, humans transformed into flesh-devouring monsters after being infected by a parasite which has brought about the apocalypse.

As a person who loves Left 4 Dead and considered Left 4 Dead 2 to be their favourite video game ever, it’s safe to say that I was looking forward to this one. So did Back 4 Blood meet my expectations? Yes but not for the reasons you might think.

If you’ve seen any discourse online you’d have likely seen the phrase “It’s basically Left 4 Dead 3” thrown around (i’ve even used it myself) which is what a lot of people wanted but I honestly think that does this game an injustice. Sure the game is very clearly a game that could have been Left 4 Dead 3. That much is clear when playing. But what makes Back 4 Blood truly amazing from my brief time with it isn’t how it’s like it’s spiritual prequels… it’s how it’s better than them.

Back 4 Blood feels like an evolution to the Left 4 Dead formula and not just a team desperately trying to cash in on past successes. It takes what was felt like an often isolated co-op experience in Left 4 Dead and doubles down on the teamplay aspect. The introduction of a currency and shop allows for a dynamic where players can actively help each other when necessary. They can buy equipment not only for themselves but for teammates to help them out. Instead of only having the one weapon with limited ammo, all players can carry all types of ammo, meaning you can carry and drop spare rounds for your party, an extremely useful tool if each player is specialising differently.

To top it all off though we have the deck-building element which allows players to dive into their own playstyle. Not only does this allow for a deeper single player experience with a playstyle more flushed out than “I pick up machete so I stab” it also allows teams of 4 to create decks that benefit each other as well as themselves with perks that apply to the entire team or just the player picking them. It’s a really cool mechanic that I hope to see get even deeper as we get closer to the release of the game.

I do want to point out though that there is one issue I have with Back 4 Blood and that’s the variety of special infected. They're all kind of bland and boring looking. They look unique enough to stand out for the most part but they lack that uniqueness and style that the special infected had in the Left 4 Dead game. I wish they went a bit more out there with the designs as they are a little too tame for my tastes.
To sum it up, Back 4 Blood doesn’t just feel like Left 4 Dead 3, it feels like a Left 4 Dead game for the modern era of gaming and that is exactly what I hope to see more of come it’s release June 22nd 2021.
