Frank's want of companionship is a desire straight from the Gothic Era. While many people seek companionship and desire to have a life-long mate, it's obvious that the desire is forced onto the character by the rich women writing him. There is very little to his life and experience before this that leads to his character wanting to be married, but Shelley's expectation of marriage being what would calm a savage beast reflects quite obviously the feelings of that age.
