The Japanese kamikaze plane originated cruise missiles, not the V-1. Suicide kamikaze pilots planned Pacific Fleet battleship attacks. Pilots flew low and fast to keep hidden until the last second since the plane was full of bombs. Two decades later, US military planners still considered kamikazes while designing the 1970s cruise missile. Cruise missiles have guiding systems, 1,000 miles of fuel, and 1,000 pounds of nuclear bombs. They tried to protect bombers from air defenses while completing missions. Instead of rockets, turbofan engines propelled the 500-mph missile, which was easier to shoot down. American Tomahawk cruise missiles were the first modern ones for flight below 100 meters.
