So even though it is padding the thing I like about the side quests is that you get to spend extra time with certain characters and build their relationships. It's one thing to imply they probably hung out, it's more to have them literally go through the process even if the tasks themselves are largely meaningless.

Also these are sort of low stakes moments that I can appreciate before everything ramps up. I always thought that Midgar has a natural arc. I wasn't surprised they chose it by itself for the remake.
