We spent Halloween up the remote reaches of the Inyo Mountains exploring an abandoned mine. This mine was unusual because it was very wet inside with water trickling into the tunnel from the walls and ceiling. This dark, wet habitat was home to several large, black-gray spiders that were everywhere. We also came across a young diamondback rattlesnake. Interesting artifacts that we found were a late 1800s lid for a tin of blasting caps, a bottleneck from a purple glass bottle that still had the cork in the spout, several old food cans, and a pair of overalls from the early to mid 1900s. After exploring the mine, we hiked up into an even more remote canyon to investigate three small mining prospect tunnels.
