AC Mirage is Just a Sequel to Origins
The Gameplay Walkthrough for AC Mirage left me more excited than I thought I was gonna be for this game. It looks like the developers really are delivering on *most* of the promises they gave us leading up to the reveal. What I liked most about the showcase was seeing how functional and varied the stealth is, how beautiful Baghdad is, and how tight the entire game seems to be. It seems like making this game smaller in scope has really played in favor of the devs, and I think, so far, they are capturing the assassin fantasy very well. What I felt disappointed by was the parkour. I wasn't expecting Unity or Ezio-level parkour like some people were, but I was hoping for more of a noticeable difference coming from Valhalla. yes, Basim is faster, yes there is a better world design for parkour, but it still is holding forward and pressing x to climb, and I can see that becoming frustrating, especially when we have such a beautiful city that I would much rather explore using older parkour systems. I worry that the fact this city and its parkour playground are so well designed means that parkour is actually MORE disappointing than in the RPG trilogy since those games didn't even have the architecture necessary to drive the system to its limits and still be left wanting.
While I was thinking about how to manage my expectations to not get disappointed with anything else, I've been slowly assuming this is just the sequel to Origins we never got. Not narratively of course, but mechanically and aesthetically. It seems like after Origins, many people including myself, loved the game, and were hoping this was a building block to a new and fresh assassin experience. Though Origins really did capture the Assassin Fantasy for me, it had some things missing: It needed social stealth that we could use organically, better black box missions, a big city with better parkour routes, variation to stealth tools and stealth animations and an overall polish from the initial experience to make it fit more with Assassin's Creed. Guess what Mirage is doing? All of these. It feels like Mirage is the spiritual successor to Origins, in terms of tone, Assassin vibes, and narrative & gameplay mechanics/relationship with the animus. It feels like this is the game we should have gotten instead of Odyssey... as if Mirage is a game that existed in a different timeline where Odyssey didn't and for some reason it bled into ours. And I'm damn happy that it did. Let me know your thoughts below.
Regardless, I am extremely excited for this game and have been bingeing videos about Mirage for days.
Assassin's Creed Mirage is an upcoming action-adventure game developed by Ubisoft Bordeaux and published by Ubisoft. It will be the thirteenth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series and the successor to 2020's Assassin's Creed Valhalla.
