Tried to submit another counterstop for Calice Cup but I might have gone a bit too far.
Became harder and harder to die because I kept getting better at the game each loop lmao.
Merry Christmas everyone.

Out Zone is a push-up scrolling arcade shmup/ run and gun from 1990 by Toaplan, one of the big arcade shmup companies from back in the day. The game doesn't scroll automatically, you have to walk up the screen to "push" it up. The game loops infinitely and this run keeps playing until I get the max score possible, also called a counterstop.
The time you have left to live is indicated by the energy counter in the top-left of the screen. You need to pick up blue E items to refill it.
You have access to two normal weapons and two special weapons. You can switch between the normal weapons by picking up the C items.
- The 8-directional laser fires in whatever direction you're moving, and creates a sweep of bullets as you change direction.
- The 3-way wide shot always shoots forward.
The two main weapons can be upgraded by picking up two "P" items.
The special weapons mostly suck, so I avoid them as much as possible.
Certain enemies can drop different colored "SP" items. These have different effects depending on the color:
- Yellow - Super Burner, a directional, limited range weapon. Penalty weapon.
- Pink - Super Ball, an energy ball that circles around the player and can be shot upwards, piercing walls.
- Pale Pink - Shield - Resembles the color for the super ball a lot. Gives you a 1-hit shield but getting hit doesn't give you any invincibility frames.
- Blue - Speed up - Makes you move faster.
- Green - Energy Extend - Increases the length of you energy meter.
- Red - 1UP - Very rare extend. Didn't show up in this run.
These SP items drop randomly. This is kinda annoying since you lose the speed up after every loop and it's random when you get it back.
This game has a million secrets, some more useful to scoring than others.
The most important one for scoring are the Zero Wing secrets. These give 50k each and can appear 9 times in a loop. So they give 450k and you get about 2 million for a loop, so they are a pretty big chunk of your score.
They appear in certain spots if you've picked up eight C items at that point. The counter resets back to one if you pick up a ninth C item. Since the directional weapon kind of sucks, this is pretty hard to route. A good trick is picking up a special weapon and then a C item, since it reverts you back to the normal weapon you had before picking up the special weapon.
See this link for a full list of the secrets: http://shootingstar.game.coocan.jp/outzone_tec.html
The game keeps getting harder until somewhere in loop 3. You want to be careful with how fast you push the screen up since you can get overwhelmed really fast.
A good thing to know is that it's fixed when each cyborg starts shooting, so keep that in mind.
Another good thing to know is that there is a sweet spot distance where you can shoot an enemy but it can't shoot you.
I want to say that this is easily one of the best games that Toaplan made. All of the stages are pretty varied and unique and you rarely do the same thing twice. It's a Toaplan game but without the usual filler and copy+paste that Toaplan is known for.
