As we’re going to explore in this video, the game we’re talking about in today’s video is indeed the ultimate “lost in translation” experience – from the history and circumstances surrounding the game itself, all the way down to the ludic systems that govern the moment-to-moment gameplay.
It was firmly intended to be the final, console-defining, large-scale international PlayStation 1 blockbuster before it gave way to the PS2 – but in the last moment, Sony Interactive cut the game’s marketing budget and scrubbed its international release, condemning it to a small, domestic-only launch in Japan and due to its convoluted code, it became known as a game that was impossible to translate even by the most dedicated fan-translators/rom-hackers.
Until just recently. We’ll get to all of this and more over the course of this video!
All of this made it a game that, among retro gaming enthusiasts, became more fabled and mist-shrouded than the real-world mountain which originated its title:
Aconcagua.
