Action Game Genres
This same kind of "control zone thinking" is also a major factor in a lot of games, and they all approach them in different ways. Fighting games have only one enemy, but extremely complicated control zones. The focus is on getting the enemy to commit to a specific move (thereby negating all his other control zones) or committing to an attack yourself that will reduce their options.
Some 3D action games (such as first person shooters) use control zones a bit differently. The difficulty in navigating and picturing the space is higher, so they are more like Contra-style games in terms of simplified enemy capabilities and terrain being ultra-important.
Etc etc etc.
