Active vs Passive Pickups | SHOOTOUT | Fishman vs DiMarzio
338Explaining the differences and comparing the tones of two common pickups, Fishman Fluence Modern Active pickups vs DiMarzio Blaze passive pickups. The Fishman pickups are active pickups, meaning they have a built in preamp that requires a battery to power them, and the Dimarzio's are passive pickups meaning they don't require a battery to operate and don't have an on board preamp.
Usually active pickups are known for being 'sterile' or lacking the 'soul' of passive pickups but the technology, like so many things related to the guitar has come a long way in the last ten years or so.
The Fishman pickups are wired to a 3 way switch with a push/pull pot on the volume knob to allow for 'split coil' tones and also feature a second push/pull pot on the tone pot to allow for a second voicing of the pickups to create a more 'passive' kind of a tone. I'm not using that setting in this comparison.
The Dimarzio's are wired to a standard 5 way switch and don't feature any push/pull tonal options.
