Actor 'Accidently' Takes His Own Life While Filming
Jon-Erik Hexumâs tragic death is one of Hollywoodâs most heartbreaking on-set accidents. On October 12, 1984, Hexum was filming the television series Cover Up when the incident occurred. At just 26 years old, Hexum was a rising star known for his charisma and good looks. He played a CIA agent on the action-adventure series, which required frequent use of firearms for dramatic scenes.
During a break in filming, Hexum grew impatient with production delays. In a moment of frustration, he jokingly picked up a prop gunâa .44 Magnum loaded with blanksâand pointed it at his head. Reportedly, Hexum said, "Can you believe this crap?" before pulling the trigger. Tragically, while blanks are not loaded with bullets, they still contain gunpowder, which creates explosive force. When Hexum fired the gun, the pressure from the blank's discharge was strong enough to fracture his skull. The resulting impact drove a bone fragment into his brain, causing severe injury.
Hexum was rushed to the hospital and underwent five hours of surgery. Despite the efforts of doctors, he was declared brain-dead six days later, on October 18, 1984. His family made the difficult decision to donate his organs, a gesture that saved multiple lives.
The incident shocked the entertainment industry and led to heightened awareness of on-set safety protocols, particularly regarding firearms. Hexumâs death serves as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers of using even seemingly harmless props in filmmaking. His loss left a lasting impact on fans and colleagues, with many remembering him for his talent and the promising career that was tragically cut short.
