Advent Calendar | Season 1 | Episode 8 | December 8 | Amy Dallis
The eighth episode in this series explores one of the legends about the Candy Cane and why it is so closely associated with Christmas. This particular legend tells of a kindly Choirmaster from Cologne during the 17th century who used white candy canes to keep children still during the service. In order to get the church leaders to accept giving the children candy, he decided to teach a lesson with the sweets. The white of the candy, he said, represented the purity of baby Jesus, and the crooked shape reminds us that Christ is our Good Shepherd. And, like the Choirmaster, we can use the modern candy cane to illustrate a Christmas message--of good news and hope which endures long after the Christmas season.
