Adventure Island II: Aliens in Paradise is the Game Boy adaptation of Adventure Island 3 (https://youtu.be/UGCbrm5xXnY) that was released on the NES five months prior.
The first Game Boy Adventure Island game (https://youtu.be/OezmnHdWLgQ) was a respectable early-gen attempt to port a then current NES game to the handheld, but it was a clear downgrade from the NES game in every respect.
But wow, what a difference a year (and a change in development staff) can make!
Aliens in Paradise, created by Now Production (the team responsible for the NES game), brings the entire AI3 experience to the Game Boy intact. It retains all of the stages, items, power-ups, and secrets from the NES, and it even introduces some welcome quality-of-life improvements. There's a new password system, and you can now freely move about the world map and replay cleared stages whenever you like.
Most of the bosses are new and a few level layouts and enemy placements were altered to better fit the small screen, but pretty much everything else is the same. The controls feel exactly like the NES game's, the graphics and sound are as close as can be given the hardware differences, and the game runs smoothly with virtually no slowdown or flicker.
As one of the first Game Boy titles to deliver a largely uncompromised, console-class experience that could fit in your pocket, Aliens in Paradise was everything that its predecessor tried to be and more. It's an outstanding piece of work.
(I also really loved that little "Yay!" animation that Higgins does when you select a level. It's hilarious to see when the text box right beneath him says he's entering a stage with a name like "The Desolation" or "In the Abyss.")
