A new facility has been officially unveiled in Hampshire today with the express purpose of training Royal Navy sailors for service in Afghanistan. The new training facility at Longmoor Camp in Hampshire replicates a forward operating base in Afghanistan. There are 700 Royal Navy personnel of all ranks serving in Afghanistan at the moment, working as augmentees who have swapped the deck of ship for an assault rifle. They are deployed to take up specific posts where needed -- from medics to intelligence gathering. Fifty five personnel are taking part in a two-week course at the new training facility, although up to 80 can be accommodated. It comes as the Royal Navy's pre-deployment training is praised for its realism and effectiveness.
