Twenty years after the conflict began, the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan continues with all forces expected to leave the country by September.

But the path to a safe departure can be far from straightforward.

Brigadier Max Marriner, a former commander of British Forces in Iraq, said the departure must be "squeaky" clean.
