Agamemnon was the king of Mycenae and the commander of the Greek army during Homer's Illiad's Trojan War. He is portrayed as a superb warrior but a self-centered tyrant who notoriously upset his indestructible champion Achilles, prolonging the conflict and suffering of his warriors. There are no historical records of a Mycenaean monarch with that name, although the city was affluent in the Bronze Age, and there may have been a true, though much shorter, Greek-led invasion on Troy. Both of these claims are backed up by archaeological data. Unfortunately, the renowned gold mask is known as the 'Mask of Agamemnon,' discovered in a shaft tomb at Mycenae and commonly regarded as the 'Mask of Agamemnon,' is dated up to 400 years before any plausible Agamemnon candidate who fits a Trojan War timeline.
