After much anticipation, Hellforge Studios finally released a playable demo of Age of Hell to the world during Realms Deep 2021.

I went into this having no idea if I'd be able to complete it at all, because I know it features a significant amount of slaughtermap influence. I came out hopeful that I'll be able to enjoy the full game on its lowest difficulty. That may sound underwhelming, but don't be fooled - AoH's lowest difficulty can on par with OG Doom on UV at times, just due to sheer number of enemies. The developers are taking the approach of having the same enemy spawns, but different damage/speed/aggressiveness balance, which makes a huge difference as I found out during this stream (which features 2 playthroughs on different difficulty settings).

There's definitely still room for improvement on the accessibility front, but the developers seemed receptive to and grateful for my feedback as someone who has only played a handful of community megawads so far. It's pretty clear that they want this to be enjoyable by as wide of an audience as possible, and very clear that a lot of effort and skill is going into making this game stand out. That being said, I expect that the slaughtermap-esque portions may still render this unpalatable to some folks.
