The first day of QuakeCon 2021 included the announcement of a new Quake port for PC and latest/previous-gen consoles, including both official mission packs, Dimension of the Past (released by MachineGames 5 years prior), and a brand new expansion also done by MachineGames. This is that new expansion.

I went into this not really knowing what to expect, but mostly expecting something akin to Dimension of the Past. I was therefore blown away when what I found was something far more akin to other modern works such as Arcane Dimensions (although at a smaller scale).

There is a lot of impressive architecture and scenery in this pak and it definitely feels more immersive than I remember DOPA feeling. It's not without its flaws - there was one particular map with a lot of traps that I would gladly never play again, and unfortunately the final map was easily the weakest part of the entire expansion and felt shockingly unbalanced and rushed compared to the rest (like, did they even test it for ammo balance?).

Would I say this blew me away unlike any community content ever has? For the most part no, but it did have some moments that were at least shades of or comparable to some of the best moments I've seen in community maps. The Realm of Cultists starts out with a very Marcher-Fortress-esque "holy crap" reveal and also features the cool bit with the floor crumbling away below you. That might be my favorite pair of levels in this expansion at least in terms of aesthetics. (The surprisingly Xen-esque beginning of the Realm of Astrologers could compete on aesthetics with that skybox, but the platforming there kind of slows things down in a way that I would imagine could irritate Quake players.)
