Trying to get new units has always disappointed me when using the drained. It's almost always strongest to use them to opportunistically steal low tier high upgrade units quickly because it helps immediately in that fight and anything you steal will be stronger than the drained.

Still though, the playthrough is always more interesting ignoring that advice.
