Researchers have created an advanced AI tool that can trace a person’s recent whereabouts by analyzing the microorganisms they’ve come into contact with during their travels.
Rather than relying on GPS, scientists from Lund University in Sweden developed the Microbiome Geographic Population Structure (mGPS), an AI-driven system that pinpoints locations based on the unique microbial communities found in different regions.
Their research showed that these microorganisms act as distinctive “microbial fingerprints,” with each area harboring its own signature microbiome.
