76Going behind the scenes of AIR with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon is an interesting ride! Michael Jordan himself is heavily involved in the casting and made some major requests to the production team in order for the movie to get made. The number one request was that Viola Davis plays his mother – because his mother absolutely ran things! He said he didn’t want anyone else but Viola to play her. Obviously, Viola was honored at the request, but considerably nervous because she was set to play a real, tangible, woman. She definitely didn’t take the role lightly. Another specific request made by Michael Jordan was that his father be cast in the light of his personality – he said his father had the best personality ever and he really wanted that to shine through. Ben Affleck said he knew the perfect man for it – who happens to be Viola Davis’ husband, Julius Tennon. Apparently, he is the most hilarious guy who everyone loves to be around on set. There was also a lot of discussion about Michael Jordan’s character in the film – he’s actually nowhere to be seen! Ben Affleck said he couldn’t possibly get someone to play the iconic man without it being truly unbelievable. He said he’d rather him just be talked about and referenced a lot, rather than take the audience out of it with someone who couldn’t stand up to the iconic reputation Michael Jordan has on the world.
