90s Movies That Would Never Get Made Today
147Let’s be real – we love to put on a 90s movie for a nice dose of nostalgia, but if you really look at a good portion of them, a lot of them should be canceled. We’ve got some serious teacher student creepiness in Never Been Kissed, American Pie’s webcam scene is ultimately evil and cringe, American Beauty is a lawsuit waiting to happen, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is incredibly transphobic. I still love the 90s, but it really makes me cringe when I think about how awful some of the narratives were. Cruel Intentions was one of my favorite movies, but there are some really questionable scenes involving SA and manipulation that are really hard to overlook – as much as I will always love Sarah Michelle Gellar, the movie is problematic. Forrest Gump is iconic, but Tom Hanks’ performance of a ‘slow-witted’ man – which won an Oscar – would never fly today. Did you know Aladdin had an incredibly offensive lyric that Disney scrambled to change before the home video release? And as much as I love Lana Del Rey, she’ll never get me to like Lolita – it’s way too creepy. The fact that it got not only one, but two movies based on the book is beyond me. Unfortunately, there is a lot to unpack in this list of 90s movies – don’t come for me when I ruin some of your favorites, but make sure to stick around until the very end of the video.
