Welcome to a non-commentary playthrough of the original Ace Combat (Air Combat as it was named outside of Japan), where I'll be going through each of the game's 17 sorties and doing my very best to ace a lot of bogeys!

I have set myself some conditions for this run: Hard difficulty, no damage and (if possible), destroy any non-targets or as many as I can. I'm also using certain planes for certain missions. All of this is to try and unlock a bunch of achievements through the RetroAchievements website, just for some extra 'ace pilot' cred.

STORY:
The destruction of the Nemesis and its fleet was a major victory for the government forces, but despite the successes against the coup the conflict continued to rage. Somehow, the enemy was still receiving supplies. Determined to bring the war to an end, Commander Tyler requested that Phoenix of Scarface Squadron lead a reconnassiance sortie over a potential staging ground in the northwest. This was not an idle request; the Commander had come to trust in the capabilities of the mercenary team and knew that if anything unexpected turned up, then there was no-one better than their leader to handle it.
His decision would turn out to be correct, as not only would Phoenix unearth some valuable intel, but he would face a rematch with the YF-23 duo of Ebony and Ivory, who had survived their last encounter with the 'fiery bird of the skies' and eagerly sought a chance for revenge.

BRIEFING:
"Despite the elimination of all fuel refineries, the enemy continues to conduct operations. You are assigned to recon for undetected fuel supplies. Although this is just recon, engage and eliminate any opposition patrols. Good hunting!"

Designated aircraft: Saab JSF-39 Gripen (SF-39)

MY THOUGHTS:
So, I had an unexpected issue arise! The achivement calls for you to beat this mission with the SF-39 but on Hard it does not unlock until you actually clear this mission! Therefore, you get a two for one deal today; my initial run in the YF-23 (practice for the next mission) and then my second go with the SF-39 after I cleared the game. It is definitely harder with the latter, as the SF-39 can easily get one-shotted by a single missile! However, its agility isn't too shabby and it can turn and burn with the rest of them.

The biggest threat here is without a doubt the two YF-23s (which ended up being one of the trickier foes I had to deal with in the whole game, hence why they get named in my little story!) although I managed to get cocky and get taken out by a RAH-66. I ain't even mad, because that's impressive for them!
