Welcome to a non-commentary playthrough of the original Ace Combat (Air Combat as it was named outside of Japan), where I'll be going through each of the game's 17 sorties and doing my very best to ace a lot of bogeys!

I have set myself some conditions for this run: Hard difficulty, no damage and (if possible), destroy any non-targets or as many as I can. I'm also using certain planes for certain missions. All of this is to try and unlock a bunch of achievements through the RetroAchievements website, just for some extra 'ace pilot' cred.

STORY:
Documents recovered from the transport that was destroyed during the reconnaissance mission revealed the existence of a primary refueling centre hidden away in the northen desert region of the Skully Islands. Consisting of several banks of solar arrays and cutting edge technologies, this facility was far greater in scope than the refinery and plant that Scarface Squadron had previously destroyed.
Commander Tyler immediately requested the destruction of the facility, knowing that it would cripple the rebels' supply lines once and for all. However, intelligence reported that the rebel commander had deployed several of the best pilots under his command to defend the area in anticipation. Ebony and Ivory, having limped away from their last encounter with Phoenix, had no doubt alerted their boss.
Four pairs of wings stood ready to blunt any assault; Juggernaut Team piloting A-10s and the Twin Tigers in their agile SF-39s guarded the forward refinery and the western solar array respectively. Sun and Moon of the Eclipse Team stood watch over the main facility in their SU-27 Flankers and finally, lying in wait over the eastern solar array, Ebony and Ivory in their now repaired and upgraded YF-23s sought to even the score with Phoenix once and for all.
The rest of Scarface would launch a diversionary attack to lure away most of the facility's defenders while Phoenix, piloting a YF-23 of his own, tested himself against the very best wings that the enemy had.

BRIEFING:
"Our recon work has identified the last fuel depot. Go and bomb it flat. Target: A group of fuel production bases. The enemy is using its top guns in this theater. Keep focused and good hunting!"

Designated aircraft: Y-23 Black Widow II

MY THOUGHTS:
You have a lot of ground to cover in his one, though its much less of a pain than the pipeline mission! Once again, ground defences should be your primary target where possible. I used my guns on as many of the primaries as possible, saving my missiles for the bogeys.
The A-10 pair is an absolute joke. Ground attack aircraft do not make good dogfighters! They should give you absolutely no trouble.
The 'Tiger' SF-39s are a bit more of a pain as they're rather good at evading, but keep on them.
'Ebony and Ivory' are every bit as troublesome as the last two missions they were in and will catch you unawares if you aren't paying attention. Thankfully, this is the last time you'll have to deal with them. They gave me the most issues this entire mission.
The SU-27s guarding the main target are surprisingly a lot easier to deal with, but be sure to take down the ground SAMs first as there's a good few of them surrounding the facility.
