Welcome to a non-commentary playthrough of the original Ace Combat (Air Combat as it was named outside of Japan), where I'll be going through each of the game's 17 sorties and doing my very best to ace a lot of bogeys!

I have set myself some conditions for this run: Hard difficulty, no damage and (if possible), destroy any non-targets or as many as I can. I'm also using certain planes for certain missions. All of this is to try and unlock a bunch of achievements through the RetroAchievements website, just for some extra 'ace pilot' cred.

STORY:
Scorpion Island fell to the government forces, and the rebellion collpased along with it. However, the rebel commander had already escaped to the northwest before the attack had started, leaking false intel to throw the government off the scent.
Commander Tyler immediately ordered Scarface Squadron to pursue, having tracked down the headquarters of the rebels thanks to data found at the Scorpion Island base. Located in the Schwarzwind ravine that ran into the region was the last rebel hideout, protected once again by the advanced SAMs that could not be fooled even by Scarface's countermeasures.
Phoenix would lead the way into the ravine followed by his wingmates with only one mission; bring an end to the coup, once and for all.

BRIEFING:
"The enemy is on his last legs. One more strike should lay him out. Take your unit through the ravine to the enemy headquarters. Intel is sketchy on force composition near the headquarters, so keep on your toes. Fly low on your way in. Everything above the ravine is a SAM kill zone. Good luck."

Designated aircraft: F-22 Raptor

MY THOUGHTS:
The second ravine mission and honestly, it's not quite as memorable as the first. You have a handful of RAH-66s and AAs to take care of while making sure you don't smash your expensive aircraft against solid rock. Doing it with no damage was a bit harder as the AA is so very fond of getting a good shot at me every now and then.
There was one RAH-66 that for some reason, I couldn't take down at all. No matter where I locked onto it from, the missile always seemed to hit the ground. I think it's a glitch as the chopper seems to take off from underneath the ground. I gave it about three tries before deciding it wasn't worth it!
Also, whoever put these achievements together knew what they were doing. Making me use one of the best aircraft in the game on one of the easiest and shortest missions? Well played! =P

NOTE: Played & recorded on DuckStation with RetroAchievements enabled.
