This is a 3D model/texture demo reel featuring the mech KG-6 Sleipnir from the anime "Aldnoah.Zero". Modeling was done in Autodesk Maya, texture/shading was painted in Substance and rendered using Arnold. Final composition was done in After Effects.

Watching the robot in the anime made me wonder what it would look like under realistic shading and lighting conditions. The anime used a cel-shading type of shader to blend in with the style and artwork of the rest of the anime but I wanted to make a "battle-worn" and realistic version of it myself.

I started modeling in January 2018, right after new years during my spare time. Modeling was slow because I had to collect references from anywhere I could find, including plastic model kit instructions, toys and the anime. The most difficult areas to model were the bits where it was difficult to see, such as the insides of the legs and how they open and close when the mech is running, or how the stabilizers are attached to the legs and how they unfold. I took the time to make sure the proportions were correct and I cross-checked across multiple references. The plastic model instructions were essential to building the mechanisms under the skin/armor of the robot.

I used Substance Painter to paint the textures and shaders on the robot. I wanted a moderate to heavily-weathered look on the paint; after all Inaho did pilot this mech in some pretty awesome fights. Using Substance Painter to texture and shade the model was a lot like working with a real-life scale plastic model. I had a lot of fun painting the wear into this model. Texture and Shading took about 2.5-3 months.

Unfortunately the model does not have a rig on it so all I could do was pose the mech in a few positions. The legs and arms are modeled to rotate and move with each other so if I do end up learning how to rig this robot the model should have no problems being animated. The most challenging part of rigging this mech would be the legs.

このメカは2014年の「アルドノア・ゼロ」アニメに登場しました。アニメのメカはセルシェード的な映像です。私は現実的なレンダリングしてみたいはきになりました。けっこカッコイにできる思った。

1月にモデリングを始めた、新しい年の直後。作る時間かかるの理由はたくさん資料を集まった。参考資料はプラモやおもちゃ、そしてもちろんアニメも一回見る。参考資料は足りない部分は足の中、そしてスタビライザーの構造。ここはモデル作った時は難しでした。プラモの中にある取扱説明書すごき助かった。

テクスチャとシェーダ作るソフトは「Substance」からできました。アニメの主人公、伊奈帆くんはこのメカたくさんカッコイ戦いよく見せてくれました。このメカのカッコイイメージを伝えたかった。Substanceの中にペイントの技術はまるでプラモを作るみたい、楽しかった。

残念ながら、このモデルはまだリグ作りませんので、ポスしかできる。だがモデルは全部フィットができる、将来リグを学べるなら作るかも。
